The Perl examples there looked just too cryptic to me.
I think you've hit on one major reason why some of what might have been done done in perl ~15 years ago is likely to be done in python or maybe ruby today.
Perl is extremely powerful, but you can do a lot of what you say you want with chains of other "single function" tools like awk, grep, sort, uniq, ....

There is nothing wrong with buying ram from a 3rd party. Check out OWC. (http://www.macsales.com/)
I've used OWC for ages, but I've been through two of their NuRAM sets for my Mini and have had serious problems (kernel panics, memtest errors, etc).
I just picked up an 8GB G.Skill pair from newegg for $70. Here's a list (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007609+600000401+600006178+600000445&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&IsNodeId=1&Subcategory=381&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=) of DDR3 PC8500 ram.

Okay, so perhaps the title is a bit vague.
I've enabled the lock rotation/mute switch plist mod on my iPhone 4. However, when using the switch as a rotation lock switch, there's a blank black icon in my multitasking menu where the "Mute on/off" button should be.
Could somebody SSH/iFile/whatever the icons for the multitasking mute on/off button for me and send them this way? Likely to be in:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app"
The rotation lock icon is under the name, "RotationLockButton-iphone.png" and "RotationUnlockButton-iphone.png" if that helps at all.

Is that done just by going to accounts, unlocking the lock, right clicking the name and selecting the home folder -- and I presume just making sure it's the same folder that is selected for SL?
System Preferences > Accounts > Click the lock and type your password > Right-click the user and select "Advanced Options..." > Home directory
You just select the same folder as in SL. If your username is Steve, then it would be Macintosh HD/Users/Steve, assuming Macintosh HD is the volume where SL is installed.
Also, given my setup (SSD booting and running SL with my apps) what is the best way to install Lion? I have the dmg. file, so what would I do to make sure I don't wipe out my SSD situation?
Create a new partition to the HD (e.g. Mac OS X Lion) and when installing Lion, it will ask you where do you want to install it. Select the volume you just created and that's it. You don't need to boot from the DMG, just open it while running SL

I imagine the situation in Australia is that the independents and Greens will be wooed - until the very first opportunity to dump them occurs, at which point they'll be discarded posthaste.
Yep, they usually do that here too, but this time around sufficient number of voters didn't want either of them enough to hold their nose and vote for the other one. Usually if there's someone you can't vote for you can always find someone to vote against. This election also had the highest number of 'informal' nobody at all votes for three decades I think.
Haha, going on what I said previously about them granting the Independents' wishes, the political cartoons are reflecting this - one has an independent asking "can I have a pony?". Another one is asking for a rocketship to send one of his cows over the Moon and the big party leaders are nodding in agreement, yep, we can give you that... :)

Ok, we are getting somewhere. When I press play after hitting capture now, the video starts playing. When I hit ESC to stop it, it does stop, but nothing happens. no dialog boxes asking me what to name it, and nothing appears in the browser.
The iMovie thing does work, but I'd rather do it "the right way." :)

I'd like to get each clip every time I started to record, and it is too hard to do manually. Should I just get out of this iMovie mindset or is it possible to do this?
Either you pressed the capture now button before the video device was ready, or the device isn't playing. In Either case you can press the capture now, then press play on your camera.

My DVR uses the same symbols for FF and Rewind as my VCR.
Your CF/SD cards are just flash RAM. Flash RAM is just a whole lot of capacitors. Maybe we should call them all "caps".

photoshop can't generate these filenames because they're not sequential.

The iMac is going to be faster than the MacPro. Which I think is pretty sad. The MacPro will give you more expansion opportunities, but if you don't need them it's a moot point. You could throw on a Promise RAID hooked into Thunderbolt and get extremely fast transfer speeds. I would get the iMac and start saving for the next major upgrade in the MacPro line. I wouldn't buy any current Mac that didn't have Thunderbolt.
Not only will the iMac be faster, but it will also use a heck of a lot less electricity. A MacPro along with a monitor will draw 1,300-1,500 watts running hard. Think a small space heater on high. An iMac about 200-250 watts. Maybe you don't pay for the electricity, but the MacPro is a very power hungry beast.

Safari 5.1 on Lion for me is, without exaggeration, 4 times faster loading pages than 5.0.3 on SL. It's insanely fast loading anything from HTML5 to Flash content.

The chair of the FCC talked earlier this week about the big push forward the US will see this year in digitizing the nation with the 700 mHz as well as WiMax and the digital conversion of TV stations. He wants true broadband access across the country and he says that 200 kbps is NOT broadband and new rules will be coming down the pipeline soon to force companies to up their network speeds and access.
